Q.1 What can I expect during my first visit?

A. The first visit usually takes about an hour. Dr. K will sit down with you in a consultation, and will ask about your problem and medical history. He will perform a complete evaluation including chiropractic, neurological and orthopedic tests to determine your problem, and if he can help you. X-rays may be recommended if they are deemed medically necessary. In most cases, treatment can be given on this first visit.

Q.2 Does insurance cover chiropractic care?

A. Most health insurance plans have chiropractic coverage. Feel free to call our office and we can check if you have benefits.

Q. 3 Do I need a referral from my primary doctor?

A. Although we do get a lot of referrals from other doctors, health insurance does not usually require a referral to be seen by a chiropractor

Q. 4 Is it true that once you start going to a chiropractor, you have to keep going?

A. No. It is always up to the patient how long they choose to benefit from chiropractic care. Patients usually need to come in a little more in the beginning to retrain the bones and muscles to keep their proper alignment. The longer a problem has been there, usually the longer it takes to resolve. Once you are back in order, it is up to you if you’d like to continue with supportive/maintenance care, or if you’d like to just call if things start acting up again or when you have a new problem.

Q.5 How does the Activator Instrument work? Does it move the bone as much as a manual manipulation?

A. The Activator works because of the speed of the instrument in a small concentrated surface area. It feels very gentle but research shows that it moves the vertebra just as much as a traditional manual adjustment.

Q.6 Can I receive chiropractic care if I have a disc herniation, bone spurs or osteoporosis?

A. Yes. We treat patients with these conditions all the time. They respond very well to the Activator Technique, where we can gently restore the proper vertebral alignment without “twisting and cracking” the patient.

Q.7 Do children need chiropractic care?

A. By the age of 10, kids have already fallen over 1,500 times. Even childbirth can be traumatic on newborns, leaving them with misalignments from day one. Dr. K adjusted his son Cole when he was one day old. Kids of all ages usually respond very well to chiropractic care. It’s easier to work on little problem areas before they have had them for years and become major issues.

Q.8 How long does a chiropractor have to go to school?

A. About 8 years, depending on the state. Kansas requires a 4 year undergraduate degree prior to entering chiropractic college. The D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic) degree is a rigorous 4 year program. It is very comparable to medical school in training in orthopedics, neurology, pathology, nutrition and radiology. The major difference is in med school they are getting pharmacology, where in chiropractic school we get adjusting technique classes. There are also national and state board exams that must be successfully completed in order to obtain a license.

Dr. Craig Koshlap has been in practice for 18 years, so offers a lot of experience with a wide variety of conditions.
